Halloween might be spooky, but your environmental footprint doesn’t have to be 🎃
From costumes to candy wrappers, Halloween can easily turn into a mountain of plastic. But with a few swaps (and a little French-inspired “less-is-more” thinking), you can throw a party that’s festive and planet-friendly (no magic spells required.)

1. Costumes: Raid the closet before you turn to Amazon’s one-day delivery
Before buying a brand-new polyester costume, take a peek at what’s already at home.
That old bedsheet? Classic ghost.
A cardboard box? Hello, robot.
A few scarves and a hat? Voilà, pirate.
You can also host a costume swap with friends or at school. Kids love getting “new” outfits from each other and parents love saving money. Bonus: no shipping, no plastic packaging, and no waste.

2. Decorations: Think thrift, not trash
Step away from the glittery plastic pumpkins. Instead, try real ones! Carved or painted gourds, dried leaves, paper bats, and upcycled glass jars with tea lights make for a cozy, earthy vibe.
Raid your recycling bin for cardboard or paper scraps and let the kids cut, color, and craft their own décor. Not only will your home look charmingly haunted, it’ll tell a story too!
3. Treats: Go for quality over quantity
We get it - candy is kind of the point. But there are gentler ways to do it:
-
Choose chocolate wrapped in foil (recyclable!) instead of plastic.
-
Support brands using organic or fair-trade ingredients.
-
Mix in some homemade snacks - here are a few BRILLIANT ideas from Pinterest.
Rice Krispie “brains”
Strawberry “ghosts”
Hot dog “pumpkins”
And if your child comes home with a bag full of candy you’d rather not keep? Consider a switch witch - they trade in some candy for a small toy or book. Less sugar, less waste, more magic.

4. Activities: Keep it simple (and outside, if you can!)
A nature scavenger hunt, pumpkin bowling with old cans, or a DIY costume runway are all eco-friendly hits. Outdoor games also mean fewer decorations and less cleanup.
And yes, you’re absolutely allowed to skip the goodie bags.
5. Cleanup: Small swaps, big difference
Use real plates and cups instead of disposables (or compostable options if you’re hosting a crowd.) Compost leftover food, recycle what you can, and keep the rest minimal.

If sticky fingers are part of the party (and they will be), skip the wipes and reach for La Petite Crème diapering lotion - gentle enough for little hands and faces, and made with only six natural ingredients.
Petites pensées
The only thing your party needs to be is fun for the kids. It doesn’t need to be perfect, polished, and in competition with the party your neighbor hosted last year…
